Self Promotions
hello. 'Rizla' business cards.
I needed a business card to promote myself for the RSA Exhibition and then my degree show. The question i set myself was how could i reach out to as many people as possible with the limited audience attending both exhibitions?
The Rizla paper business card ended up being the solution.
The idea is a self perpetuating contact card. My contact details are on the card itself, and inside are ten more papers with my contact details which the original reciprocates can then give on... hopefully.
With this in mind for every one card i give out, another ten people can potentially reach me.
Each packet was hand made, cut from card and printed out with my desktop printer. Altogether i think i've made about fourty, so potentially I could have reached 440 people.

GD3 ISTD 78rpm/mp3 - Daftpunk rubix cube font & Sigur ros icelandic phonetics conceptual packaging
ISTD – 78rpm/mp3
The aim of this project is to typographically express lyrics from two songs, Daft Punk – ‘Technologic’ and Sigur rós – ‘Von’. Both of these tracks use lyrics in an unconventional way, Technologic using the lyrics to create the sound and the beat of the track by digitally altering the lyrics, cutting and pasting the words together to form new sounds, and Von is a song sang completely in ‘Vonlenska’, a non-literal language, without fixed syntax, grammar, word meaning, and even distinct words. Instead, Vonlenska consists of emotive syllables and phonemes.
These two pieces explore the melodic and rhythmic elements of singing and lyrics without the conceptual content of language. The Daft Punk piece doing this through fracturing type with a modular bespoke typeface and interactive ‘type cubes’, and the Sigur rós piece exploring typographical forms of Icelandic Phonetics.

GD3 Title sequence motion project
One of three title sequences for a hypothetical Tv series on BBC four about contemporary classical composers.
This sequence explores Enos fascination with generative music by randomly generating an image from the amplitude of the waveforms within the music being played.
The track is a sample of "An Ending (Ascent)" from "Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks. - not copyright to me.
Made using aftereffects
"I have nothing to say and i'm saying it" is a quote on poetry by John Cage.
This sequence is a happy mistake. The original sequence was a typographical piece inspired by Fluxus Video, which when exported became corrupted. In keeping with John Cages fascination with random chance, i decided to work with the corrupted version and polish it with the original.
The track is a sample of "4.33" recorded fro the BBC proms with a freeware clock tick over the top. - the soundtrack is not copyright to me.
Made using aftereffects and premier
This sequence is inspired by Tan Duns experimental work using paper as an orchestra in his paper concertos. I used a lotus flower to link the notion of chance and cause and effect from the other two sequences to this one.
The track is a sample of "For The World " from the hero soundtrack. and not copyrighted to myself.
Made using origami, quicktime pro and final cut pro

" The lotus flower has a unique characteristic in that it blooms and sheds its seeds at the same time. In the context of Buddhism, the theory of karma says that, just like the lotus flower, our life is made up of cause and effect. Every cause -- be it action, word or thought -- will imprint an effect that can be seen in this lifetime or in future lives. "

GD3 NTU promotions
A tutor once said that NTU had a sort of "mafia" which made it highly likely for us to get a job as people who had left NTU would usually hire from the same stock.
With this in mind this promotional video is part of an identity for our degree show based around the concept of the "NTU mafia", creating a parody of the infamous reservoir dogs torture scene.
This was a fun tongue in cheek project. Camera work by Bethany Allen.

Commissions
My most recent commission was promotions for a play put on by the new theatre Nottingham. The play is an Italian play put on but a Russian theatre group. The Typography and colour scheme represent the Russian group, giving them an identity that can be applied to other productions.
The play explores the fine line between fiction and reality. It caused outrage when first performed in 1921 and is now celebrated as one of the most defining plays of the 20th Century.
Playing with the concept of reality, the characters are almost a shadow of the actors, which is mimicked with the hatstand shadow. The Hat stand (my hatstand actually) features prominently in the play, improvising many set pieces such as a fountain or tree.
The promotion consists of a A6 flyer and an A3 poster. The group liked them so much they got another 50 printed for personal use and i'm currently being asked to produce T-shirts for the cast and crew.
Currently I work for Walton Design, a clothing company, on freelance basis as their promotional graphic designer. I work from home correspond via email and phone. My briefs include posters and flyer's for their latest promotional campaigns as well as in store point of sale information and gift vouchers. My responsibilities included making the work print ready and specifying stock and ink. I have to meet very tight deadlines given the nature of the fashion and retail industries, so often I’m working very long hours. I work on occasion with a Birmingham based illustrator, who I also correspond with via email and phone. My current project for them is a seasonal catalogue and email/web 2.0 based promotions, as well as coming up with ideas for promotions alongside their marketing department.

"Six characters wander into a rehearsal and ask the director to help them finish their story. Farcically absurd and tragically poignant, Pirandello’s ‘comedy in the making’ questions the very nature of character and asks do you have to be ‘real’ to have a story?"- Jess Gardiner (producer)

Thanks for visiting my webspace, shortly this site will be updated with my portfolio so please come back again within the next couple of days.
Please feel free to browse the other blogs in "view my entire profile", most of these are older projects, but GD3 Title sequence is one of my current projects if you're intersted in more recent work.
Thanks
